We are happy to inform you that Concordia's Centre for Continuing Education will be offering a new series of courses on the issue of sustainability.

These courses will appeal to people who work inside a variety of institutions, who are interested in making positive ecological and/or social change happen but are not sure where to begin, or want a chance to develop new perspectives, skills and abilities to begin integrating sustainability values and practice more fully into their lives. FALL 2006

BA 981 Introduction to Sustainability(September 19 - November 21)
Tuesday, 6-8 p.m.

This course provides a brief history of environmentalism, drawing on the social and economic issues, from the 1970s to the present, that have led to an evolution towards sustainable development and sustainability. The meaning of sustainability is explored in its fullest sense (ecological, social, economic), including debates and perspectives on a variety of issues, such as environmental justice and corporate greenwashing, from local to global scales. This is an important course to provide grounding and a thorough background in the development of and questions about sustainability, along with how the concept is being actualized in the world.

BA 982 Our Role as Agents of Change (September 19 - November 21)
Tuesday, 8:15 - 10:15 p.m.

Inspired by the idea that we can transform the world by transforming ourselves, this course asks us to take a critical look at our own positions as change agents in our interactions and relationships with others and with the world. Participants will study social change movements, and examine the roles that they play in their work, civic, and personal lives. Moreover, there will be an opportunity to reflect on how they do, and can, make a difference in their communities. Assignments will involve actual examples in the Montreal community, journaling the experiences, and creating a stronger grounding in the history of social change movements and what we can learn from them in todays world. This course is grounded in questions of how we define and value quality of life, appealing to anyone who wants to better understand how we as individuals can make a difference.
